Communism’s Finest Hour

Totally Awesome Picture of the Week 44

A massive Ikea sign in Nanjing looms over peasants as they weed a city park. Aha! The perfect ominous opening for the Forty-Fourth Totally Awesome Picture of the Week (4 being the unlucky number in China). Nanjing, China’s historical Southern capital city, known world-wide as a location of horror during World War II, is once again being ravaged by foreign forces. This time, however, the citizens are embracing the pillagers and doing their best to accommodate the conspicuous thieving. Happily they dump their hard earned pay checks into open loot bags in exchange for the same cheap crap they can get off the street, as though housing it under a foreign brand name quadruples its worth.

Marauders of all echelons have established themselves in strongholds throughout the city: from the typical fast food dealers KFC, MacDonald’s, Starbucks and Pizza Hut, to more offensive petty thieves like Walmart, Toys R Us and Ikea, to the big time con artists like Gucci and Lois Vuitton. Meanwhile, the people smile, eagerly enter these establishments in hordes and leave them with full-fledged grins! Skipping while their purchases bang lightly against their knees in the advertising paper sacks, they are reminded with each bouncy step that their money and time have been consumed by these evil goods. A nation of masochists.

But, as usual, I digress. The picture. The peasant gardeners: Real hand-in-the-dirt laborers outfitted in straw hats, surrounded by nature’s green, toiling in the foreground, dwarfed by the bright yellow block letters of the iconic industrial-chic sign. Beautiful or sickening? What do these gardeners think? Are they saving their bai jiu and mooncake money for an Ikea french press? Don’t be ridiculous.

When the Japanese invaded the loss of the city was indicated by the burning of Purple Mountain. How will we know this time? When it is dynamited and replaced with a Sam’s Club?
