Nanjing, CHINA – Despite overwhelming evidence suggesting the end of all comforting space and quietude, it appears that a handful of peaceful sanctuaries may still remain within China’s borders. This elderly man, unsatisfied practicing Tai Chi amongst the elbows of a hundred other retirees, went in search of seclusion, and managed to find a small, vacant patch of concrete near the river, shaded by drooping trees. “This is the sort of place that everyone needs – somewhere to calm yourself, to escape the hordes of people. Unfortunately, very few spots like this remain. The government ought to do something. People need space.” However, after speaking with us, the man requested that we not reveal his location. “The moment anyone else finds out, this place will be overrun,” he said. “In China, recognition is dooming.”
