Such a darling setup – and magnified, of course, to domineering proportions. Life-size, it seems, was not impressive enough, not quite as instructive. These are the days of magnitude over quantity, or quality, for that matter- the time of things that make your chin raise.
And what a message! What an image! The light falls so delicately upon the joining of two unlikely hands – one, the rigid stone of an ancient warrior; the other, the soft and dainty flesh of a shy schoolgirl. Most likely the display bears a wholly inspirational title – ‘The Harmony of Past and Present,’ or something similar.
But what is really happening? Which hand reached to which? (Not to cast a pall of perversi…

Foreign-er Education
It was a hotel in Xi’An, home of the world’s most famous doll collection. The television fired up to the usual stuff, each click leading us around the carousel of tolerable news and soap operas…
Wait! What’s this? No emblem in the corner, but that was not so odd – most eye-catching, most strange, was the presence of a portly, mustached white man leaning from the window of a heavily-modified motor vehicle, speaking in some slow Midwestern American drawl about his plan to launch his car into a barrel roll over a line of junkers in an arena packed with screaming spectators. His name, we quickly learned, was Spanky Spangler.
Had it been late night TV in some divy mo…

No Quiet on the Eastern Front
Not long ago I experienced a profound realization. I was leaning from our office window at the time, one hand supporting my body by grasping the swinging metal bars, while with the other I launched an aerial assault upon a pair of wailing cats perched on the patchwork roof below. I was not trying to maim; I wanted only to quiet their screams or drive them away, and was using as my ammunition cloves of garlic, aspirin tablets, and perhaps a jiao (small Chinese coin) or two. Still, it suddenly occurred to me that this was perhaps not an ordinary thing for a person to be doing. But it seemed unfair to cast the blame for my deviance on the two felines in that one isolated incident. There was a greater…

Waste Not Yet Ye Be Wasted

A simple garbage bin, a pleasant wood exterior, designed in accordance with the ultra-modern concept of discretion when disposing. Right bin or left bin?. Choose wisely. Consumption has past; it is too late to change that. You weren’t satisfied with your purchase? You think the whole thing was a mistake? Well, don’t worry – you had to buy it. There’s no time for forethought or consideration in this world – the best guide is the Gut. It is well-documented that the “organ” is intrinsically linked to the experience of freedom.
Now, knee deep in your own waste, it is your problem, so you and your Gut must make another decision.
Which brings us to the ultimate q…

They Know Something We Don’t Know

And with one foul stroke of the artist’s pen, out goes the rumor of American Utopia, flushed as carelessly as the product the new America sells so well. A barefoot, sleepy-eyed non-Asian, sleeves rolled up, scrubbing on hands and knees while the peppy t.p. awaits his duty – the happiest moment of the poor working sap’s day.
“BATHROOM TISSUE”
“Coming From America Premium Quality”
Reeking of sarcasm, as though the years of American complaints over the “cheap Chinese crap” they keep buying anyway have finally echoed back to the ears that originally labored to create it. “Dear USA” the packaging m…
