A deep, stentorian voice echoed through the dry canyon air. Laser beams scattered across the wide, flat surface, forming images to match the narrator’s tale: trampling mustangs of water, swooping eagles, the Statue of Liberty. It was a story of mythical proportions, the battle of man versus nature, national progress, and Democracy, ending with the great destructive and creative powers of the old river finally being harnessed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
The Grand Coulee Dam is the largest of its kind in the United States. Its concrete girth spreads across the Columbia River as it winds up into Eastern Washington, into canyon country, red rocks and brush. Woody Guthrie was commissione…

We go to the river when we can. From our apartment it is just a quick turn and a crossing and we are there. It is wide as it bisects the city of Yichang, and slow moving. The water is not clean. We judge the quality of the air by the visibility over the river – some days the round hills and towers on the other side are crisp; other times we cannot see the opposite bank, and the sun glows a dampened metallic orange. We go to the river to see: here flows the mighty Yangtze – Changjiang. The long river, the great river, the river of history. The lifeline of a nation.
We see a man washing his car in the river. It is a white sedan. He has driven it to the water’s lapping edge via a long boat ramp from the road. He has rolled up his blue pant legs, t…

The Nanjing Galaxy Yacht Club floats securely in the yellowish, turbid water of the Yangtze River. The neighborhood – in the northwest of the city, far from the Ming Dynasty wall – is mostly industrial. Not far upstream is the famous Yangtze River Bridge, a dark, ominous shape stretching across the water. There are no yachts nearby, though a few skidoos and hovercraft vessels bob gently under tarps, along the shifting dock that extends from the parking lot down to the yacht club’s door, where rows of idle employees greet incoming guests.
It is our second visit to the yacht club. Lily and I do not have a membership, if they are even available; we have been guests each time. Our first visit was in honor of o…

The niu year has now passed. While it may be inauspicious to go digging up old news and past grudges, a quick rummaging through our archives has revealed a few loose tigers, so to speak, which deserve a bit of the spotlight on this festive day. And perhaps they can help us in our unsolicited foretelling.
What does this coming year hold in store for the common man, the average worker, someone like the honest vendor with his rare mammal claws and immaculate white Nikes? We can only predict that the inevitable surge in demand for tiger paraphernalia will bring him a quick sales boost and a sudden arrest when the time comes for appeasing cries of animal activists.
The odds are not good for the old cat at the Yichang zoo, consi…

“Dazed morning at the primary school, raspy voice trying to read a book about butterflies over the constant murmurs of the students. One of my students, the one with the possessed eyes, has now given me a little ‘present’ – twice now. Actually, today before class he came up to me by the railing outside of the classroom and said, ‘Sichuan da dizhen!’ (Big earthquake in Sichuan!) and then shook his body. During class he did nothing but draw a picture; it depicts a man with a hat and beard riding a horse – the same character seen in the first picture he gave me (both stuffed into handmade – during class – envelopes). Here is th…
