Stuff People Ingest Voluntarily episode 31
Before you start accusing us of focusing on the poor, fading laundry as part of our own Antonioni scheme to sabotage the world’s image of an entire nation, let us be clear: we are more interested in the one small bright square so carefully preserved like some tiny peep window into the underbelly of the corn juice craze than we are in the clothesline that hangs below it. Yes, even Chinese people do laundry, and also like to purchase dish towels in strict color themes of vibrant hues. Some things are the same the world over.
Corn juice, however, has not spread so fast as other customs. For those unaware that such a beverage even exists, here is a close-up, courtesy of a lon…

The Nanjing Galaxy Yacht Club floats securely in the yellowish, turbid water of the Yangtze River. The neighborhood – in the northwest of the city, far from the Ming Dynasty wall – is mostly industrial. Not far upstream is the famous Yangtze River Bridge, a dark, ominous shape stretching across the water. There are no yachts nearby, though a few skidoos and hovercraft vessels bob gently under tarps, along the shifting dock that extends from the parking lot down to the yacht club’s door, where rows of idle employees greet incoming guests.
It is our second visit to the yacht club. Lily and I do not have a membership, if they are even available; we have been guests each time. Our first visit was in honor of o…

The niu year has now passed. While it may be inauspicious to go digging up old news and past grudges, a quick rummaging through our archives has revealed a few loose tigers, so to speak, which deserve a bit of the spotlight on this festive day. And perhaps they can help us in our unsolicited foretelling.
What does this coming year hold in store for the common man, the average worker, someone like the honest vendor with his rare mammal claws and immaculate white Nikes? We can only predict that the inevitable surge in demand for tiger paraphernalia will bring him a quick sales boost and a sudden arrest when the time comes for appeasing cries of animal activists.
The odds are not good for the old cat at the Yichang zoo, consi…

What this substantial piece of city land is doing unpaved and undeveloped is a mystery of commerce and real estate. Whatever the reason, that red flag piercing the mud surely indicates a coming edifice. A new age high rise, perhaps? Another shopping mall? A complex of bungalows? Turkey farm? The possibilities abound. However, we’ll go out on a limb and predict that the building(s) erected on this property will be identical to that cluster of towers behind it. Keep your eyes on this one!
